Background:
Kaito was the second VOCALOID, created by Crypton Future Media company, two years after Meiko. He's not actually a living person, but a voice synthesizer program robot, which is used for communication and entertainment. After his voice recording, the company decided to create a full appearance for Kaito, which is as he looks on his package. Unfortunately, when he and Meiko were published, their sales didn’t do well, and the company considered both to be failures.

After a year of absence, the company created the 2nd generation of VOCALOID, and Kaito welcomed the birth of Hatsune Miku. Surprisingly, she did a much better job than Kaito and Meiko. Her sales went over the top, becoming the most popular idol in VOCALOID history. Although he knew they were on different levels of stardom, Kaito was very proud of her. Due to Miku's popularity, she was kept busy with her songs and had no chance to spend time with the older Vocaloids.

Until one day, Miku sent a made up song through the internet with the title, 'A Request From Hatsune'. The contents of the song contained a line of lyrics that wondered, "Where are you and what are you doing now?" Kaito, who had been watching her from time to time, answered her with a song titled 'An Answer To Hatsune Miku'. "I was eating ice cream," he replied through his song. The last words of his bouncy tune were, "Miku, let's eat it together next time."

This is where the Kaito’s fate changed.

The request and reply songs caught the company’s attention. It was clear Miku was lonely. They called Kaito to the studio and granted him permission to sing again. Kaito was unbelievably happy for these turn of events. After he released a few songs, his sales went up twice as before. He gradually became the most popular male Vocaloid among the fans. He couldn't thank Miku enough for her help in boosting his popularity. Miku was simply relieved to have Kaito by her side. They even began to sing duets together, such as 'Cantarella', which became one of Kaito’s best and most popular songs.

His journey had just started when he found himself greeting the newest Vocaloids: the feisty Kagamine twins, Rin and Len. They were adorable, but at the same time they were quite troublesome. Two years later, Megurine Luka was created. As they gained more Vocaloids into their group, Kaito began to realize his job wasn't limited to singing. It was also his responsibility to take care of everyone. It’s a job he shares with Meiko, who thankfully helps him out.

Although they aren't blood related siblings, he considers all the Crypton Vocaloids his family.

Personality:
Kaito is capable of having a variety of personality ‘types’, which depend on his User’s preferences. When he's not needed (or left alone), his A.I. will automatically set to his actual (default) personality. By default, he's a caring person who brings joy to everyone. He enjoys bringing everyone together as a family or striking interesting conversation with others. He has a tendency to be both a father and big brother figure at the same time, but he can be a bit too childish when he’s stuck in very confusing situations. Basically, he and Miku share similar personalities.

Out of all the Crypton Vocaloids, he isn't the smartest one. His IQ can't compete with Len’s, and sometimes his actions will lead to mistakes. He also enjoys receiving attention, which is one reason why he always does silly things. Ridiculous dances, daydreaming, and making adorable (but goofy) faces are just a few examples of his attention-grabby ways. Because of his at-times absurd actions, he’s often scolded while the others do nothing but watch. This granted him a funny nickname -- ‘Bakaito’ or ‘Idiot Kaito’. Still, even when he has nothing to do, he’s behaving somewhat silly. He’ll often be seen lazing around, going on a ‘date’ with his ice cream.

Besides being a lazy idiot, he is actually quite capable of singing and acting. He also has perfect control of his feelings through his songs. However, when it comes to romancing, he becomes less talkative and shy for some reason. This same reaction happens when people ask him for a date. Even humanoid robots have soft spots sometimes! He also loves to play instruments, especially the piano and the electric guitar because these instruments interest him the most. Unfortunately, he doesn’t get many chances to play those instruments while jamming with the group. Because of his position as a Vocaloid, you’re more likely to see him play on drums.

Kaito has some great advantages when it comes to live, on stage performances. He’s never had one until recently, when he performed ‘Pane Dhiria’, which gave him a lot of good responses from the audience (especially from the fangirls, of course). His looks are the main asset of the whole performance, something Kaito takes note of while he’s dancing. He does a few more cool poses and charming expressions in front of a crowd, unlike his usual demeanor at home.

Additionally, Kaito is not a good fighter. He's a man, but not manly enough. He has shown he can be protective of someone he holds dear, but he can't win a fight against strong people because he wasn’t made for combat. This drives him to learn how to be strong. He secretly asks Gakupo for some advice and lessons. Gakupo ended up teaching him how to make the most serious face he’s ever made. Kaito took the lesson to heart, although his serious face can only last for a few seconds. There’s no need for such a serious face all the time, especially since he’s an idol. Otherwise, he could get himself into trouble.

Each Vocaloid has their own special item, which usually symbolizes one of their favorite things. Kaito's favorite item is ice cream, specifically the Haagen-Dazs brand. He has a strong obsession with this item, and it fits him perfectly. Kaito eats ice cream five or more times a day. He can eat almost all flavors of ice cream, but he’s usually seen eating something blue flavored, vanilla, and watermelon. The best thing about being a robot with a sweet tooth is the inability to get toothaches. On the other hand, Kaito hates spice the most. He can handle a small amount, but if it’s too much, he can get sick.

Abilities:
Kaito is a voice synthesizer program, like the rest of the Vocaloids. He has the ability to sing for hours without strain and the ability to interface with compatible computers. There's nothing physically remarkable about him that people would immediately notice. Kaito is also a free-roaming "program" that is able to jump from any machine connected to the internet. However, since he has a robot body that functions in the real world, he is unable to use this ability. Try not to beat him at math! As a robot, his calculations are perfect. He’s also able to store almost all his song data in his memory.

Like any regular computer, Kaito is also able to change modes. These modes are: Normal mode, when he’s being himself; Yandere mode, a rare mode where he becomes possessive of other people; Sleep mode, a setting to keep himself in low power to recharge or 'sleep'; and Shut Down mode, when he’s completely shut down or 'dead'.
